Sustainable Development Strategy for Hoog-Kortrijk

Hoog-Kortrijk Parallax contains a spatial strategy for the further sustainable development of the suburban part of Kortrijk along the E17 highway built 50 years ago and called Hoog-Kortrijk.

The strategy emphasizes the need to complement the completely car-oriented organization of the area with a high-quality public transport system and soft mobility networks (bikes, pedestrians) embedded in a forceful landscape structure. Strengthened water structures and forests form the backbones of this resilient landscape structure that can frame the further urban development of the area.

Modes of Transport

The Concept of “Parallax”

Parallax is a word commonly used by astronomers and used to describe a displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight, and is measured by the angle or semi-angle of inclination between those two lines. The term is derived from the Greek παράλλαξις (parallaxis), meaning “alteration”.

Philosophic and Geometric Sense of Parallax

In a philosophic/geometric sense, parallax is an apparent change in the direction of an object, caused by a change in observational position that provides a new line of sight.

Implications of Parallax for Urban Planning

The use of the term "Parallax" suggests a need to consider multiple perspectives and layers in urban planning, emphasizing the importance of adaptive and flexible approaches to the sustainable development of Hoog-Kortrijk.
